1992 to 2008: Archival Chronicle of Cellular Operator RTC Mobikom
Public historical record of Bulgaria's first analog cellular network: radio propagation, Benefon and Nokia hardware ecosystems, nationwide paging, and the iconic Mobika public telephone network.
The Genesis: Foundation and Coverage of RTC Mobikom
This section constitutes a public historical archive regarding Bulgaria's inaugural cellular mobile operator — Radio Telecommunication Company (RTC) Mobikom Ltd., founded in December 1992 as a joint venture between British carrier Cable and Wireless (49%), state-owned BTC (39%), and RELAX (12%). Commercial network operations officially debuted in 1993.
In an era when early GSM networks provided coverage barely within the capital city center, Mobikom's analog network under the Nordic NMT-450i standard (450 MHz) covered over 95% of Bulgarian territory. Low broadcast frequencies traversed the Balkan mountain ranges, Rhodope passes, rural settlements, the Dobruja agricultural plains, the Black Sea coastline, and all primary transit arteries. From this emerged iconic national campaigns and slogans: "Show them who you are!", the national tour campaign "On the Road with Mobikom", and the borrowed classic Bulgarian film quote: "We are on every kilometer, from here to the end of the world!" The legendary national concert tour of rock band FSB in 2000, "On the Road with Mobikom", captured as a documentary concert film across packed sports arenas nationwide, became an indelible milestone. Dialing prefixes 0799 and 048 were enduring symbols of mobility, prestige, and commercial leadership.
Base Station Infrastructure and Hardware Ecosystem
The operator's infrastructure incorporated leading hardware of the era: Nokia Actionet DX 200 mobile switching centers, high-power 450 MHz base stations with duplex filters, and German Kathrein sectoral antennas installed atop Bulgaria's highest peaks and broadcast towers — Botev Peak, Kopitoto on Vitosha, Snezhanka Tower in Pamporovo, and Frangata near Varna — providing coverage radiuses up to 50–70 km from a single transmission mast.
The company operated a nationwide network of commercial stores and introduced indestructible Nordic handsets: Benefon Delta TDP-40 with pull-out whip antenna, Benefon Dragon with high-contrast green LCD, the USA '94 World Cup gold edition Benefon Sigma Gold, compact Spica, and the 15-watt transportable Benefon Forte bag phone for maritime vessels and transport fleets, alongside Nokia Mobira Cityman 450 and vehicular Nokia 720 units.
Mobipage Radio Paging and Mobika Public Telephony
Concurrently, Mobikom engineered the national radio paging network Mobipage on 150.175 MHz VHF (access code 0179) via Glenayre Electronics and Motorola Nucleus transmitters running the POCSAG protocol: thousands of callers dictated urgent messages through human operator centers to pocket Motorola Advisor and Bravo pagers, dispatching on-call surgeons, power grid engineers, and emergency crews a decade prior to widespread SMS.
On city squares and public post offices stood iconic blue street payphones manufactured by Ascom and Landis and Gyr, accepting microchipped prepaid Mobika smart cards under ISO 7816. Their distinctive blue styling and collectible thematic photography of Bulgarian monuments, athletes, and nature created a genuine national collecting passion.
The Analog Sunset and the January 14, 2011 Renewal in Register.bg
Following regulatory denials for technological neutrality and digital licensing to CDMA-450, the company permanently discontinued analog broadcasts on August 5, 2008, and subsequently liquidated.
Years after the liquidation of the initial enterprise, on January 14, 2011, the vacant domain mobikom.bg was independently registered anew in Register.bg by our new team. The two enterprises share zero common assets, liabilities, or corporate continuity — this historical record serves as an institutional homage to wireless telecommunications pioneers. The true enterprise value of contemporary Mobikom was forged after 2011 through the 512-Byte Web Principle, independent media platforms dobrichnews.com and dobruja.com, and the bestjobs.bg skyscraper.
